Today marks one year of military occupation in DC. The DC Fiscal Policy Institute released the following statement in response:
As armed troops, ICE, and other law enforcement agents continue to patrol our streets, the District also continues to face compounding federal threats: Congress has overturned DC’s own tax law and moved to seize undue oversight over our tax code, DOGE layoffs and federal safety net cuts hurt our economy and workforce, and the president has threatened to eliminate our Home Rule based on the outcome of a local election.
“Generations of DC residents have been subjected to federal interference in local affairs—and now the most extreme consequences of such targeted attacks are on full display,” said Tazra Mitchell, Chief Policy and Strategy Officer of the DC Fiscal Policy Institute. “Nearly 700,000 DC residents are living under escalating interference from the president and Congress while being denied the same fundamental democratic rights as every other American. DC is not a political experiment for extreme policies. Our communities are not bargaining chips. We refuse to accept occupation, and we refuse to stay silent while federal lawmakers undermine our autonomy. Statehood is more important than ever.”
