Washington, DC – The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP), a nonpartisan research and policy institute in Washington, D.C., of which DC Fiscal Policy Institute (DCFPI) is a part, today voluntarily recognized an 88-member staff union represented by the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU), Local 70 of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers.

“We take great pride in working at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, and are deeply committed to our organization’s core values of equity, opportunity and economic justice,” said Alicia Mazzara, a Research Analyst at CBPP who helped organized staff. “A key goal of the union is to help us model and advance those values by empowering workers’ voices. We look forward to collaborating with leadership to support our staff and pursuing our shared goal of advancing policies that expand opportunity for low- and moderate-income people. Unions hold a critical place in the history of workers’ rights, and we are proud to be part of this movement.”

“We support the right of the Center’s staff to join NPEU, and our discussions to date have been marked by a spirit of cooperation and an emphasis on shared values,” said CBPP President Robert Greenstein. “I am proud of the entire Center staff and the work we do together. We share a common mission and a commitment to making the Center the most effective organization it can be.”

In moving to create a union, CBPP staff joined unionized peers at other leading think tanks and non-profit organizations in Washington, D.C., including the Center for American Progress, the Economic Policy Institute, and the Center for Economic and Policy Research, all of which are represented by NPEU.
