DC’s approved police budget is remaining relatively flat, on net and when accounting for inflation, despite the Mayor and DC Council enacting significant investments to expand the police force.
Every child deserves a strong start and a high-quality education, beginning at birth. Paying educators livable salaries is one step needed to boost teacher satisfaction, retention, and quality care, thereby improving DC’s early learning system.
The DC Council voted unanimously this week to advance the fiscal year (FY) 2023 budget, which goes beyond the Mayor’s proposal to make critical investments in many of DC’s most underserved communities.

This Mother’s Day, DC Councilmembers have the opportunity to celebrate the District’s mothers, birthing parents, and caregivers through action.
My testimony today will focus on three recommendations, two for ensuring the District’s recovery is inclusive of undocumented and otherwise excluded workers and one for ensuring equitable and sensible tax policy.

Last year, DC lawmakers expanded the credit to make it the most generous in the nation, but it is not the most inclusive. Currently, it excludes roughly more than 5,000 low-paid working households because they have at least one person who is undocumented.
