What are the top civic issues to focus on this election season? Many people think of public education and public safety. This year, a group of more than 100 businesses and organizations, as well as a few thousand residents are asking candidates for public office to focus on poverty as well.
A few facts: About one in three DC children live below the federal poverty line, which is $18,300 a year for a family of three. One in five DC workers earn less than $11 a hour. More than two in five DC households with children reported that they did not have enough money to buy food at some point during 2008 and 2009.
Poverty impacts all of us.
