We hope you will forgive us for being brief today. The DC Council is set to vote this morning on the city’s budget for fiscal year 2015, and so we are a bit preoccupied. There are so many important decisions to be made: What will the Council do to address homelessness? How will new funds for at-risk students in public schools be allocated? Will the DC Tax Revision Commission recommendations be adopted?
The DC Fiscal Policy Institute staff will be in the Wilson Building today following the budget deliberations to find out the answer to these questions and many, many more.
We promise to give you a full run-down of what happens in the District’s Dime on Thursday, so please check back.
One thing we know for sure: Today’s vote on the spending side of the budget will be the only vote, rather than the standard two votes on most legislation adopted in DC. The shortchanged treatment of the budget is due to the disappointing failure of the budget autonomy lawsuit. (As always, there will be a second vote, in June, on the “budget support act,” the bill that includes statutory changes reflected in the budget.) DCFPI looks forward to the day when DC residents have full control over the use of locally raised resources to support important services like education and health care.
